Description
The technique of Craquelle dying:
The Craquelle technique is a way of producing an unusual leather look.
I use a natural vegetable tanned leather which has not been dyed. Layers of paste are brushed onto the surface and allowed to dry to a brittle state. The leather is then pulled and manipulated to produce ‘cracking’ of the paste before the skin is dyed with a pigment. The leather dye seeps in through the cracks and stains just bits of the skin. The paste is then washed away. This can be done multiple times using different colours to achieve a delicate decorative pattern. Time consuming but well worth the wait.
